Our First Adventure: Part 2

20:35 May 14 2015
Times Read: 345

It was just about a day and a half south of Neverwinter when the group came across a wagon off the road. It had been looted and there was no sign of the horses nor the persons that had been driving it. This in it's self was not uncommon. What was most disturbing was that this was the wagon of Gundren and Sildar. Both were gone.

Felix approached the deserted wagon hoping to find clues as to what had happened. Elizabeth set about casting for traces of who had attacked and taken Gundren and Sildar. Damon was going to rely on his superior sense of smell to find which direction the attackers had fled. It was the newness of the group and the need to show off their superior skills to eachother that allowed the new attack to take them by suprise.

A band of goblins caught them unaware and several recieved minor injuries before they were able to regroup and repel the attack. The group captured a couple of goblins and were able to question them. They learned that the goblins had been ordered to ambush the group and kill all. The goblins belonged to the Cragmaw tribe that had been overtaken and was now under the control of someone known as "Glasstaff". Not all members of the tribe were happy with the change of command.

The goblins had been content to stick with their own kind and were now forced to work and deal with several other dark races. Hobgoblins, Orcs and even human mercenaries that had sold themselves to dark masters.

As to Gundren and Sildar? Gundren was thought to have been taken to Glasstaff himself at Cragmaw Castle, for it was rumored that he had found the map to the Forge of Spells. Sildar was to be taken to another, unknown location.

Smaug, Elizabeth and Damon were furious. If the rumors were indeed true, then Gundren had lead them into great danger without revealing the truth of it all. After some discussion, Damon and Felix were sent to dispatch the remaining goblin captives while the others got the wagon back on the road and one of the horses harnessed up to it. Friend and patron or not, Gundren had much to answer for.

It was decided to track the fleeing goblins while the trail was fresh. The wagon and supplies to Phandalin would have to wait.

With Damon and Felix leading, the group found the goblins were fleeing along the Triboar Trail, a narrow path that cut through deep forest and rocky outcrops. As the trail got narrower and less easily traveled, it was decided that Mindartis and Elizabeth would pull off the trail and hide themselves, the horses and the wagons. They were to wait 2 days. If none came back they were to make haste to Phandalin and tell the town leaders what had occured. The others would continue the hunt for the goblins.

The scent of the trail slowly began to change, there were other scents and smells added to the mix. Several boobytraps were found and disarmed. The group was closing in. Felix, a master of stealth and observation, scouted ahead to search for more traps. What he found was a small clearing. A small river cut through one side and across the river a rocky outcroping surrounded by dense bushes. The perfect ambush site. He returned to the others and filled them in on all that he had seen. The others agreed that it was probably a trap. Felix lead the others to an area where they could observe the rocks and bushy area and wait for any signs of activity. They would wait and study the goblins they believed were hiding inside.

It was not a long wait. Just as the sun was begining it's descent a lone goblin peaked it's head around the edge of the brush. He seemed to be sniffing the air before creeping out carrying two large buckets. He hurried to the edge of the stream, filled the buckets and scurried back to the saftey of the bushes. The group had found the goblin camp.

The group crept away to discuss what their next step would be. Do they stay and attack the camp hoping to find Gundren and/or Sildar? Do they continue their journey to Phandalin and hope the goblins would still be there when they returned. As they talked amoung themselves, Felix and Smaug noticed Damon had been getting more and more agitated. Damon had not shared the truth of his inner "being" and was unable to explain what was causing his restlessness. In the end it was decided to strike that night, hoping to catch the goblins by suprise.

The sun finally passed behind the hills leaving a faint glow in the sky. The animals seemed to settle down and from across the river faint mutterings and curses could be heard from the goblins. The smell of torches drifted softly in the air, almost undetectable. It was concluded that there were at least 2 goblins guarding the path behind the brush. Felix volunteered to sneak across the river and gather as much information as possible. Smaug and Damon would get as close as possible in case Felix needed help.

Did I mention Felix was a Master Thief and very, very stealthy? I have heard that the guards never knew what happened. He was upon them before they realized he was there. With the guards out of the way, and no goblins within smell (they do smell rather horrible) or sight, Felix motioned for the other two to join him. What they faced was the opening of a large cave. Faint echos could be heard from within indicating it was probably a series of connected caves with water somewhere inside. Damon tilted his head as though listening. "Wolves" he said. "There are wolves within the caves".

No wonder the gaurds at the mouth of the cave were so lax. The interior of the cave was well guarded. Again Felix offered to take point, just far enough inside the mouth of the cave to see what they were up against. Felix brought the news back that there were no goblins in sight. There were several small openings leading off of the main cavern which it'self appeared to continue back into the rocks for quite some distance. They would follow Felix into the caves, trusting his keen eyes and stealth to keep them from stumbling blindly into a pack of goblins!

Our First Adventure Together: Part 1

18:39 May 12 2015
Times Read: 366

Most had never met before this time. Fate had a purpose when she sent us all to Neverwinter.

The High Road runs for hundredes of miles along the Sword Coast. Merchants, traders, mercenaries and rumor travel far and wide along it's route.

Some of us were working as guards for some of the many caravans that travel High Road. A few of us heard rumors of something dark stiring near Phandalin. One thing in common, Gundren Rockseeker. To some he is a friend, to others a patron. To all, he sent a call for help.

Gundren had taken up residence near the small village of Phandalin, several hundred mile to the south. It is a rough and tumble frontier town for travelers and miners looking for the legendary Wave Echo Caves. What no one but he and his brothers knew was that they had found an ancient map showing it's location, and so the trouble began.

500 years ago the dwarves and gnomes in the area formed the Phandelver's Pact. They would mine and share the rich mineral and gems depositis as well as the great magical powers found in the caves. Human spellcasters made alliances with the Pact to build a great forge, the "Forge of Spells", where magical items could be crafted. Live was good, Phandalin prospered.

But like all good things, it came with a price. Orcs began sweeping through from the north, aided by an evil wizard, and laid waste to everything in their path. The wizard would try to lay seige to the mines and a great battle raged. The humans wizards stood fast and fought bravely alongside the dwarves and gnomes, defending the Forge of Spells, until a great build of magic overwhelmed the caverns and most of Wave Echo was destroyed along with those that defended her. The Forge was never found and the cave with all it's riches and wild magic faded into myth and legend.

Gundren sent his call for help and we all responded. One of us would never make it to Neverwinter. I had been taken by a dark wizard several months before, but that is another tale.

Gundren would travel on ahead of the others with his companion Sildar Hallwinter. They were to follow with the wagons and supplies and meet him in Phandalin. The High Road is never a safe place, little did they know what lay ahead.

When they gathered at the inn to meet with Gundren and Sildar to meet their fellow travelers, they were, to say the least, suprised at his choice of companions.

Along with Elizabeth, there was her friend and companion Jonathan. Also present were a rather mysterious man who they later learned was a theif wanted for several crimes in the area, Smaug Icelancer, Dragonborn, quiet but eminating power and more than a little intimidating. He traveled with a great battle dog almost as fearsome as Smaug himself!

Damon Silverclaw, Wolfblood. A wolfblood alone without his lifemate or a shadow companion. He had agreed to join Gundren hoping to hear word or rumor of what had happened to me.

Last to join the group was Mindartis. A high elf that spoke little and kept to himself. Gundren never said much about him and they had to trust Gundren knew what he was doing.
